Trifles
- Title Implications: Explain what the word “trifles” means. Do you think it is a fitting title?
It is crucial to understand that trifles basically hint at objects with no value. As such, in reference to the play, it makes sense, given that the items that female characters encounter are trifles. Also, it could imply that the males have no understanding of the value that women have in society, thereby deeming them as trifles.
- Symbolic Setting.
Where is the murder site/ farmhouse located?
The murder site is at the mega-creepy farmhouse located in the Midwestern farmhouse.
- Inside the house:
List two things that let the audience “feel” how literally cold it is:
- There is a strained relationship between the spouses.
- John Wright possesses an antisocial personality.
- List three significant details that are evidence of a poorly kept-kitchen:
- There are dirty dishes.
- There is the presence of uncooked food that is outside of the breadbox.
- There is also a dishtowel on the counter.
- Thumbnail Sketch: Comment on each of the characters (one sentence)
- Attorney Henderson seems aggressive in solving cases, but when he makes sexist comments, it does not seem to help bolster his image of one who is a fair man and liberal of thought._________________________________________
- Sheriff Peters _____________seems not to have any significant importance in society other than following the attorney of the County like a hound and making sexist comments._________________________________________
- Mr. Hale _________is an honest man and defined by the farm, making him seem rough around the edges________________________________________________
- Mrs. Peters ___________in as much as she seems to have a relation to power through her husband, she conspires with Mrs. Hale in hiding evidence that could jeopardize the freedom of Mrs. Wright._____________________________________________
- Mrs. Hale _________________has no problem talking back to a man who wields authority in an entirely patriarchal society. She is basically brave._______________________________________
- List two “ut down” comments the men make against women:
- Hale says that women only worry about trifle things.
- The attorney says women are incapable of finding a clue, although they could encounter it.
- Why does Mrs. Hale get upset with the men talking about Mrs. Wright?
The men speak in a way that seems to make it seem as if women are not of equal standards as men. They speak derogatively. Some men are entirely physically abusive and aggressive to their spouses in this society. Additionally, women cannot do anything to bring about significant punishment on their male counterparts for their crimes (Courtwright, 2008).
- Why do you think the women hide the dead bird?
They do this to prevent Minnie’s persecution (Glaspell, 2010). In this case, this bird could be used in court as evidence against Minnie, which could imply that she had the intent to have her husband killed.
