Transforming Leadership Approach- Applying the Scholar-Practitioner-Leader Model to Address Contemporary Challenges
This leadership course has been one of the most important courses I have taken besides my nursing clinical skills training courses. I have developed a very new and different perspective on what leadership nursing is. Firstly, I did not know that there were different leadership styles for different situations. This course greatly improved my knowledge of the various leadership styles and how they differ in terms of concepts and application. I have gained knowledge of the difference between contemporary leadership theories and general leadership styles and how each theory can be applied to various organizational situations and contexts to guide change, inspire and motivate, and help teams improve themselves and the organization. I have also gained knowledge on how leadership goes beyond soft skills such as communication, teamwork, keeping people motivated, and resolving any conflicts to technical skills, including managing healthcare organizations, budgets, and people within organizations. Besides leading and motivating people, leaders in healthcare settings have the role of managing the health workforce across diverse healthcare contexts (Figueroa et al., 2019).
I have also gained a lot of knowledge on the SPL model, including how it can guide my application of various leadership theories, especially the transformational leadership theory in practice. The SPL model guides the integration of scholarly knowledge with practical experience and leadership skills to guide decisions (Bailey, 2014). Arguably, I will utilize my newly gained knowledge of the SPL model in my practice at the Arizona Department of Corrections as a medical records specialist to resolve issues such as the current resistance to the use of advanced technology in the management of medical records in the department. This knowledge will help me integrate the transformational leadership theory to implement effective strategies to overcome the resistance and achieve a stakeholder-driven technological transformation within the country’s jail and prison system to manage the prison health systems.
