The Value of a Master’s-Prepared Nurse

The Value of a Master’s-Prepared Nurse

Part One: What is the value of a master’s degree in nursing?

The nursing profession is dynamic. It has many rewards and provides career advancement opportunities for nurses. Nurses must have complex knowledge and clinical skills to offer high-quality care to their patients. Nurses must continue to expand their knowledge to align with new technologies and nursing research. A master’s degree allows nurses to develop new skills, practice innovations, and conduct research (Shatto et al., 2019). Advanced education affords more opportunities for nurses to advance in their careers.

Nurses with a master’s degree can provide direct patient care, participate in nursing research, offer nursing education, participate in policy formulation, become leaders in healthcare systems, participate in multidisciplinary collaboration and implement evidence-based practices that revolutionize care delivery (Shatto et al., 2019). Nurses with master’s degrees are in great demand due to their high skills. These nurses can fill the emerging role of nurses in several practice areas, such as public health, geriatrics, pediatrics, informatics, genetics, forensics, informatics, and systems improvement (Kjellaas et al., 2020).

Reforms are being made to the healthcare delivery system. New care delivery models that are value-based require nurses to be care coordinators. A master’s degree allows nurses to be healthcare leaders in community health centers and clinics (Vaughn et al., 2018). It allows nurses to become partners in driving change that improves healthcare outcomes. More patients are entering the healthcare system. In addition, the population is aging with complex healthcare needs. More nurses will thus be required to take specialty roles to provide care in primary healthcare settings. This can be facilitated by a master’s degree in nursing.

 Part Two: Reflection

The most important concept I have learned in the first week is the value of a master’s-prepared nurse. A master’s degree provides nurses with many opportunities for career advancement. Nurses with a master’s degree can participate in specialties such as geriatrics, pediatrics, women’s health, and informatics. It also allows nurses to participate in research and improve patient care. Before week one, I did not think that a master’s degree could be different from a baccalaureate-prepared nurse. Nurses with a master’s degree improve patient care, reduce healthcare outcomes and promote interprofessional collaboration.

I took time and reviewed scholarly articles. This allowed me to formulate my opinions through a deeper scholarly research review. I am now excited about my future nursing role as a master’s prepared nurse. Even though I have a lot of work to do, the foundations I have learned in this first week will guide me in my future nursing practice. I will translate these concepts into my future nursing practice. These concepts will allow me to provide holistic care through interprofessional collaboration and communication. I will utilize healthcare resources and incorporate healthcare technology to improve healthcare outcomes. Furthermore, I will conduct nursing research and review nursing literature to help me provide evidence-based care. I will act as a nurse leader who practices transformational leadership to novice nurses. There is still a lot to discover in my master’s degree nurse journey. This course has laid the foundation to improve my nursing skills. I will use these concepts to help me in my future nursing process. I believe I am on the right career path, and I will strive to be the best-advanced nurse practitioner who promotes evidence-based practice.
