The Type of Influence Exercised by Public Administrators

Politics remains the power that public administrators exercise within public organizations. Indeed, energy is linked to public administrators’ influence in decision-making. Generally, many public administrators attend to specific political interests in a society’s setup. It implies that politics is at the epicentre of the public administration process. Thus, public administrators, such as governors, presidents, and senators, have political power over public organizations (Bryson & George, 2020). Essentially, these leaders get into office based on their political affiliation and how the citizens decide during the elections. Additionally, many of these public administrators are also presidential appointees and must be viewed to support the political inclinations and ideologies of appointing authority.

Public administrators in public organizations, dependent on their positions, utilize all four elements of power: expertise, nonverbal signals, emotion, and positional power. For instance, if a public administrator is in an authoritative position, they hold positional powers. Such classic roles need an individual to use passion or emotion to inspire others or their followers to match their interests. Besides, Johnson (2017) insists that because power is a determinant of influence, individuals with more power have more authority and confidence in their decisions. Therefore, it is true that power is linked to public administrators’ influence on decision-making.

Power is the ability to direct a specific form of authority to a particular group of people within the society. Grounded on political power and probable dominance within the society regarding authority over the resources and primary decisions, the public administrators would get office through appointments and elections (Önder & Zengin, 2022). The rule is thus fundamental to public administration, and persons who may not have the required power are less likely to flourish in public or political administration. Individual power can also be perceived through the political approach and connections individuals offer about various societal issues.
