The Story of an Hour – Irony
After Mrs. Mallard received the news about the death of her husband, she “wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment” (Chopin, 2018, para. 2). Situational and verbal irony is evident here because her behaviors showed otherwise. “When she abandoned herself, a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it repeatedly under her breath: “Free, free, free” (Chopin, 2018, para. 11). The irony is that she was happy with the news, however, her reaction and response to the death news showed that she was sad, which she was not. After receiving the news, she excused herself and left the room, leaving others to think she was upset. Verbal irony is evident when Mrs. Millard wept the death of her husband, but she is happy because she would now be free. This means that she was not happy in her marriage and celebrated his death.
As she stared out the window, she heard birds singing and could smell a coming rain storm, indicating a new start, and joy awaited her. “There would be no one to live for her during those coming years; she would live for herself” (Chopin, 2018, para. 14). This statement shows that she was unhappy in her marriage, and now that her husband was dead, she was happy that she could be free. Her happiness was also accompanied by sorrow, “She knew she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folded in death” (Chopin, 2018, para 13). Dramatic irony is evident when Mrs. Mallard’s Joy ends after discovering that her husband is still alive. After she came out of her room and learned about the news of her husband being alive, she was shocked. The shock made her suffer a heart attack and die, given that she had suffered a heart condition in the past. “Joy that kills” (Chopin, 2018, para. 23). It is ironic that she died. After her happiness was halted, she developed a heart attack that led to her death.
