The Nature of Literacy

Learning among children is a process that requires pitching instruction above the child’s current functioning level. Instruction from more capable peers or adults enables a child to reach a higher functioning level and end up functioning at that level. The main implications of classroom learning include providing students with hands-on opportunities and experiences to discover things and be aware of and plan for individual differences (Gunning, 2019). An effective lesson should have objectives, challenging and engaging activities, content, evaluation, an explanation of what is being taught and why, a good classroom atmosphere, and differentiation.

Literacy assessment and instruction are regulated under the Elementary and Secondary Act. The Common Core State Standards and the use of an assessment aligned with the standards is the main approach used by various states to ensure that every student is college and career ready. Learning institutions also use evidence-based literacy instruction to engage students in deliberate practice, tracking progress, and providing feedback. Teachers should be acquainted with the main findings of literacy research to create an effective program and determine whether research supports new materials or techniques they are considering (Gunning, 2019). Literacy development in the 21st century includes learning a second language and acquiring vocabulary. Instructors should note that students may also face stereotypes.

Effective teaching can be achieved by applying the basic principles of teaching mainly reading should be at the appropriate challenge level, children learn to read by reading, instruction should be differentiated, teachers should make connections, instruction should be contextual, functional, and systematic, teachers should promote independence, teachers should develop their learners’ self-efficacy, teachers should believe that every child can learn to write and read, teachers should encourage independence, teachers should know the student’s progress so that they can give them extra help or adjust the program and teachers should build their learners’ language proficiency (Gunning, 2019). Teachers should also have high expectations and care for their students, use every opportunity for skills reinforcement, scaffold student responses, effectively manage classrooms, match tasks and materials to student competence, and demonstrate efficacy.
