The Influence of a Leaders Personality on Decision-Making

The Influence of a Leader’s

Personality on Decision-Making

Personality plays a vital role in a person’s behavior by influencing their values and how they relate with others. Therefore, a person’s personality may impact their decisions. For instance, Lyndon B. Johnson’s (LBJ) personality made it impossible for the United States to retreat from Vietnam. Lyndon B. Johnson believed it was important to stand firm during the Vietnam War because the opponents of the policies suggested by Vietnam were disloyal to him and the country. Therefore, he was determined to ensure the United States won the war. According to Logevall (2017), Lyndon B. Johnson requested the United States Congress to permit his administration to increase the presence of the United States military in Vietnam, thus escalating the Vietnamese war because he believed that only the United States military had the skills and expertise to win the war. Lyndon B. Johnson’s political decisions were also influenced by his need to be the best and outdo everyone. Therefore, his decision to maintain the United States military presence in the United States may have been influenced by the compulsion to prove that his administration was the best after successfully ending the Vietnam War.

I believe that George Bush’s personality also had a similar impact on his foreign policy decisions because he always focused on portraying the United States as the best country. Onel (2020) argues that during the war in Iraq, George Bush used his personality to influence policies within the United States by starting to follow more expansionist and aggressive policies when dealing with foreign affairs. For example, during George Bush’s regime, the United States began using aggressive measures to end the war in Iraq and mobilizing public opinion and the media to support the United States.
