What are the importance and the benefits of the center offering temporary shelter, coaching, and parenting classes for women and children?
Every human being deserves a safe environment. Domestic violence threatens the safety of the victims and their children. Therefore, offering temporary shelter, coaching, and parenting classes for women and children is vital because it ensures that children grow up in a healthy environment, thus improving their development process. The parenting environment is essential to a child’s mental development (Yang et al., 2021). A child constantly exposed to violence may develop long-term cognitive issues and emotional disorders. Offering temporary shelter, coaching, and parenting classes for women and children experiencing domestic violence, hopelessness, and abandonment is important because it enables the victims to deal with the trauma they may have developed from the toxic environments, thus improving their mental and emotional health and well-being. The shelter’s temporary shelter service is also important because it helps reduce homelessness in the community and encourages women who are victims of domestic violence to look for help instead of staying in an abusive marriage because they do not have anywhere to go.
How can you get involved and strengthen the services that are provided at the center?
The shelter’s success relies on the contribution of all volunteers in the decision-making process and implementation of creative ideas. I can get involved and strengthen the services offered at the center by participating in decision-making and providing recommendations on improvement areas. For example, I can recommend adding a program to the coaching package to help women cope with the trauma they may be experiencing from their past abusive relationships. I can also recommend an effective strategy to reach women in abusive relationships and encourage them to speak up so that they can get the help they need. I can also recommend a program to help children transition from a toxic environment to a safe environment.
I can also brainstorm with other volunteers at the shelter to find practical solutions for the challenges that may be affecting it. Brainstorming provokes problem-solving and creativity by facilitating the exchange of ideas (Rawlinson, 2017). I can also use my cultural intelligence to ensure that the services provided at the shelter align with the client’s cultural beliefs and values. Cultural intelligence includes the capacity to govern and function successfully across different cultural contexts (Barnes & Seemiller, 2021). Therefore, I can use my cultural intelligence to increase leadership effectiveness at the shelter. For example, I can apply my cultural intelligence in creating rapport with the women and children in the shelter to encourage them to express any concerns about the quality of services offered.
How does being bilingual (Spanish and English) help them strengthen their services?
The shelter targets women and children from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Being bilingual helps the shelter strengthen its services by understanding the needs of people of Spanish origin and anyone who understands English. Being bilingual also increases social inclusion in the shelter. Social inclusion comprises full participation in society (Robinson, 2020). For example, everyone in the shelter can participate in decision-making. Being bilingual is also essential in incorporating various values and beliefs into coaching and parenting classes for women and children, thus strengthening the shelter’s services. It also enables the shelter to better understand the issues that could influence the clients’ perception of the services they receive. Being bilingual also enables the shelter to offer coaching and parenting classes in a language that the women and children can understand, thus strengthening its services. Using a language that the women and children are familiar with is also essential in creating a friendly environment, thus encouraging the women and children to speak up about their challenges.
