Team Norms and Diversity
Team norms are the rules or standards for the behavior of group members (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn, &Osborn, 2014). Norms are basically the behavior expected from team members. This can affect the cohesiveness of the group when someone doesn’t follow them. It can cause disruptions within the team. It is important to understand what is expected of you as a team member.
Diversity can affect a group positively or negatively. When people come from different backgrounds, they have different expectations. For instance, at work, we consider ourselves a team (here in the office), but we have a couple of people who don’t fit in well. One is very stern and can be considered grumpy. They have no sense of humor, and they seem to look down on the rest of us. However, I don’t think that is really what is happening; it is just that they are from a different culture. It really can affect the team’s cohesiveness, though.
