Systems and Operating Procedures – Walmart

Walmart plans to leverage technological innovation to bolster revenue in the future. Top among the company’s plans is to streamline the shopping experience across online and physical platforms by using technology (Thomas, 2020). For instance, allowing customers access to the company’s website will let them know which pick times are available for online orders. Besides, customers are in a better position to choose preferable pick-up options. These innovations offer the final customer the convenience they need, and this could encourage more purchases.

The retailer launched a new technology referred to as Alphabot in 2020 for the grocery segment. The innovation will enable shopping attendants to process orders, pack, and deliver groceries conveniently (Abbu, Fleischmann & Gopalakrishnan, 2021). Walmart decided to use the technology in the grocery business since the business segment is performing better on the e-commerce platform than other segments. In the latest report before the technology launch, the grocery business contributed to 41% of e-commerce sales, a higher contribution than general merchandise. The primary objective of Alphabot technology is to make it easier and more appealing for customers to shop online.

Walmart should solve the difficulties customers encounter when shopping by expanding online shopping tools. One of the infamous upgrades in this direction that did not last long is the scan-and-go technology. The retailer stopped using the platform after customers complained about its intrusiveness. Nonetheless, Walmart is adopting other useful mobile upgrades. A good example is the integrated store maps now available in 165 locations. Although most Walmart stores are identical, some have unique layouts. The new mobile upgrades will allow shoppers to see such details. The mobile updates also allow customers to access in-store services and make appointments.
