Sustaining our Atmosphere and Climate
Fossil fuels are formed through natural processes such as the decomposition of remains of living things (flora and fauna) and are buried deep in the earth’s ground. All fossil fuels comprise natural hydrogen and carbon bonds (hydrocarbons). They are considered non-renewable resources because they take many years to form, and the existing reserves are being depleted faster than new ones are being formed. The three types of fossil fuels include coal, petroleum, and natural gases (Dinçer & Zamfirescu, 2011). Fossil fuels are the most common sources of energy and electricity in many countries. Fossil fuels produce heat or steam to power turbines that generate electricity through combustion. Fossil oil formed from decomposed remains of marine micro-organisms is transformed through refining processes into various products such as gasoline used in cars, trains, jets, and many others (Patel & Chandra, 2014).
The main effect of fossil fuels is global warming. The combustion of fossil fuels leads to carbon dioxide emission into the atmosphere, hence playing a part in global warming. Carbon dioxide enhances radioactivity and causes the average temperature to rise. The burning of fossils also releases various air pollutants, including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. These pollutants may destroy the environment and cause human health complications and diseases like asthma.
To promote environmental sustainability. These include biomass, solar, hydropower, and wind energies. They are advantageous in the following ways: replenished within a short time, clean and inexhaustible, natural, never depleted, and producing lower levels of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Additionally, environmental sustainability can be achieved by reducing emissions and conserving energy. Emissions can be reduced in various ways, including using public transport or walking and cycling whenever possible. Energy conservation methods include purchasing equipment that uses negligible energy and minimizing practices that require a lot of energy, such as air-conditioning (The Sources and Solutions: Fossil Fuels, n.d.).

Question
Select a term from the list of choices in the Week 4 – Term Selection Table located in the course. Type your name in the table next to the word you want to choose.
Do not select a term a classmate has already chosen; only one student per term. If you choose a term hyperlinked to a source, that term is not mentioned in our textbook. Instead of being required to use the text as your third source for completing the assignment, you will be expected to use the hyperlinked source provided for you.
Download the Week 4 Assignment Template Download the Week 4 Assignment Template available in the course and replace the guiding text with your own words based on your online research.
Please do not include a cover page. All references, however, should be cited in your work and listed at the end, following APA Style expectations.
In the template, you will
Define the term thoroughly, in your own words.
Explain the importance of the term using evidence.
Discuss how the term affects living things and the physical world.
Suggest two specific actions that can be taken to promote environmental sustainability in the term.
Explain exactly how those actions will aid in safeguarding our environment in your chosen term.
Provide detailed examples to support your ideas.
