Supply Chain Operational Problems

Supply Chain Operational Problems

I have observed operational issues in the supply chain, such as material scarcity and rising freight charges. When the pandemic started, it significantly impacted the supply chain operations. Many businesses had to close their doors, with many closing permanently. Some of the problems that contributed to this problem, along with material scarcity, were improper costing, wrong consumption calculations, and lack of proper inventory control and management. Along with the increasing freight charges came the factors of the distance, package dimensions and weight, and the weather.

“When the pandemic is over the world will look very different. The supply shock that began in China in February, and the demand shock that followed as the global economy shut down, exposed flaws in firms’ production strategies and supply chains all over the world. Temporary trade restrictions and shortages of pharmaceuticals, critical medical supplies, and other products emphasized their shortcomings. These developments, combined with the trade war between the United States and China, have fueled an increase in economic nationalism. As a result of all this, manufacturers worldwide will face increased political and competitive pressures to increase domestic production, increase employment in their home countries, reduce or eliminate their reliance on risky sources, and reconsider their use of lean manufacturing strategies that involve minimizing the amount of inventory held in their global supply chains.” (Course Hero).

We were also asked about the primary reasons supply chain operational problems occur.

One of the problems that operations have experienced is the cost increase throughout the supply chain. Another problem was the supply chain’s complexity due to multiple market access channels. Consumer demands drove the need for faster, higher quality service, and supply chain risks created pressure. The supply chain was also impacted by volatility. Some factors contribute to the problem, such as commodity price increases that drove up the cost of raw materials and the rising costs of the supplier and manufacturer labour. In line with that, is higher charges for product storage, transfer, and management due to complex international logistics.
