Supervision in Social Sciences- Benefits, Ethical Considerations, and Essential Documentation

Part A: Benefits and Purpose of Supervision in Social Sciences

Supervision is a core aspect of reflective practice as well as an integral part of social sciences. Over the years, supervision has provided individuals in social sciences with a platform to reflect on their practice. In addition to reflection, individuals can evaluate, discuss and develop various innovative solutions that they identify. Notably, social workers ought to critically analyze their knowledge, values, skills, and understanding of their tasks (Voicu, 2017). Additionally, a supervisory environment should present a conducive environment for social workers to reflect on their decisions, practices, and interventions. Therefore, supervision mainly functions to enhance a social worker’s knowledge, attitudes, and professional skills to achieve competency while providing quality care.

Part B: Ethical Considerations Necessary during Supervision

Essentially, there are various ethical concerns, specifically in the clinical settings, which may spill over to supervisory positions and therapeutic relationships. Ideally, ethical concerns are quite common in the clinical setting, and hence it is upon the clinical supervisor to identify these issues, primarily because they may be problematic. Accordingly, some of the presented ethical issues revolve around relationships with other professionals, interprofessional colleagues, potential challenges in electronic documentation, and physician-patient relationships. Therefore, the supervisor is expected to identify these ethical issues and assess them (Morrissey, 2020). For that reason, the professionals will have no difficulty identifying and investigating these issues through continual assessments, perhaps before they escalate to becoming a problem. Through this, they can make up a more comprehensive unit. In addition, supervisors also need to remind their subordinates about the limited confidentiality and ensure that their clients understand the clear consent before they adhere to them.
