Summary of Goodnight Moon
Goodnight Moon is a children’s picture book by Margaret Wise Brown, illustrated by Clement Hurd. The story pivots on a little bunny preparing to go to bed in his room, colored green. Before the bunny went to sleep, he said goodnight to everything in his surroundings: the red balloon, three little bears who sit on chairs, the quiet old lady who says to the bunny ‘hush,’ among other things. The book follows the rhyme and repetition pattern. In that respect, it makes it suitable for reading during bedtime. It’s a build-up into the story’s lullaby, bidding goodnight to everything around him, even out to the moon and stars (Brown and Hurd 15). The melodic flow pushes the readers into dreamland, each repetition an assuring refrain that echoes through the pages.
Picture Book Traits
Repetition
It uses repetitiveness and rhyme in the text, which makes it easier for the child to learn and allows for the development of familiarity, which is critical in young children’s learning.
Simple Language
The language used is simple, clear, and quite suitable for children in the early stages of reading and listening.
Theme of Routine
The book focuses on the bedtime routine, which gives a good night message, and this is something that children of that age can easily relate to.
Calming Tone
The overall atmosphere is calm and serene, which is meant to help children to get to sleep. This is well supported by the rhythm and the vocabulary used in the book.
Engagement with the Reader
