Steps to Instill Citizen Trust in Public Administration

It is crucial to understand that the primary opportunity lies in the reality that the local governments are responsible for making decisions that directly impact the quality of daily life for the community. In this case, public trust at the local level virtually ensures that democracy works upwards from the ground level to benefit all persons. As such, this lofty task is often imposed on the local government managers.

The first step in which trust can be instilled is exercising authority through professional responsibility and in an ethical manner. In this case, the managers will be able to have significant repercussions on society in how they undertake their obligations. For instance, an organization known to be acting ethically by the employees could have positive benefits and ameliorated outcomes in the business (Kettl, 2016). In this case, ethical behavior perception can essentially exacerbate the performance of employees, satisfaction of jobs, and the commitment of the organization notwithstanding. Drawing from this example, it is clear that when people entrusted with authority are ethical and professional in their deeds, there is a strong likelihood that people will start trusting the government.

Furthermore, it is crucial to note that for the authorities to gain the public’s trust, there has to be productive professional management, effective and elected officials who are public-spirited, vigilant media, and an interested community. Vigilant press would play a crucial role in ensuring that the public is aware of how the authorities behave or manage the affairs of the government (Eggers et al., 2021). Their part is to act as the public’s whistleblowers or even the people’s eyes to keep them informed. In this case, therefore, it is essential to understand that with willing people, the authority will be able to slowly gain their trust, especially when they ensure that they make professional engagements.

Another solid way to ensure that the public trusts the authority is to ensure that any personal interest should never impact the aspect of professional decision-making. In this case, the leaders entrusted with power should not use their position of influence to make decisions that only favor a minority or themselves, to be specific. Some leaders use their parts to award themselves tenders or loot public funds. Given that the public is wary of such leaders who are after making sure that they steal from the crowd, they rely on vigilant media to ensure that they are held accountable (Birkland, 2015). On the other hand, through honesty and good relations with the media, the authorities can ensure they gain the public’s trust through the press.

Besides, it is vital to note that an open and transparent government to its people would ensure the effectiveness of the government. Undoubtedly, when a government is acceptable, there is a strong possibility that the general public will gradually trust it and will not give the government a hard time implementing policies.

Lastly, the public can trust the authority when the government makes adequate checks and balances. Additionally, it can even ensure that it is willing to confront any inappropriate conduct within the government, and outside influence without being partial would bolster the public’s trust in the government.
