Statement of Purpose – Higher Education Program
Academic background is important for career and personal growth, which is why I am currently focused on completing my graduate degree in higher education. My goal is to acquire the knowledge, skills, and capabilities required to advance my career in education and become a professional in the education sector. My life experiences have played a vital role in fostering my interest in pursuing a graduate degree in higher education. For example, my social work background has enabled me to interact with university students from diverse backgrounds and understand the challenges they encounter in the learning environment. This has encouraged me to pursue a graduate degree in higher education so that I can get the professional qualifications needed to advocate for policies that can influence positive change in the higher education learning environment and acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to offer quality education to university students. Also, I currently run and operate a Pre-K program, which has also fostered my interest in pursuing a graduate degree in higher education. The Pre-K program has helped me understand that learners have different learning needs that should be considered at all education levels to promote equality. This has influenced my interest in pursuing a graduate degree in higher education so that I can acquire the knowledge needed to enact reforms that promote inclusive education in higher learning institutions, especially for students with special learning needs, to minimize dropout rates.
I will focus on leveraging my strengths to succeed in the graduate degree in higher education and deal with the challenges I may encounter during the program. One of the strengths is adaptability. I will use my ability to adapt to the changes around me to succeed by adapting to the changes in the teaching approach, assignment deadlines, and group members to ensure that these changes do not limit my concentration and focus. The second strength is communication skills. I will use my communication skills to present my ideas in the program’s assignment and communicate with the instructors and other learners to get clarification on the content taught within the program and assistance on how to improve my understanding of concepts that may be difficult to understand. The third strength is time management skills. I will apply my time management skills to maintain a proper balance between my academic, work, and personal life so that I do not miss assignment deadlines and class sessions during the program. I will also use my teamwork skills to collaborate with other learners in group discussions to enhance my understanding of the concepts taught within the program.
I am determined to complete the graduate degree in higher education program because it will help me achieve my goals as a higher education professional and place me in a better position to advocate for positive change in the higher education learning and teaching environment. For example, earning a degree in higher education would help me acquire the knowledge and skills I need to hold an administrative position in higher education, enabling me to serve as a higher education professional and participate in decision-making to enact changes within higher education. Earning a degree in higher education will also boost my qualifications as an academic adviser, thus enabling me to work as an academic adviser in curriculum development. In addition, a degree in higher education will help me acquire the knowledge and skills needed to work as a curriculum developer, thus enabling me to participate in creating curriculums that accommodate students with learning needs as part of diversity and inclusion management in higher education.
