Social Security Benefits

Social Security Benefits

In 1935, the Social Security Act was passed in America, marking a new stage in accepting the Federal Government’s responsibility to care for its citizens’ welfare (Cassella, n.d). This act created a national contribution for the retirement annuity of old-age workers in commerce and industry. Any person born in 1929 or later requires a minimum of ten years at work to be eligible for retirement benefits. The Social Security benefits are based on an individual’s lifetime earnings. The actual earnings are typically adjusted to account for the variations in average wages since the first year the earnings started being received. Social Security then calculates the average indexed monthly earnings for 35 years, during which one earned the most (Social Security Administration, 2021). The benefits can extend to dependents and survivors of an individual. Social Security cards are generally issued to US citizens, non-citizens working in the US, and permanent residents. Social Security income depends on one’s earnings over one’s lifetime, the age at which one began receiving the benefits, and whether one is eligible to receive a spouse’s benefits as opposed to one’s own. Unemployment benefits are also offered, enabling one to receive Social Security retirement benefits.

I agree with my findings regarding earning Social Security benefits. The Government needs to take care of the welfare of individuals. By requiring individuals working to pay towards Social Security, the Government ensures that individuals can lead quality lives even in their retirement. When such an individual dies, their dependents’ welfare is well cared for. The Social Security benefits can be improved by raising the eligibility age to 63 from 62 and ensuring a longevity insurance benefit that should begin at 82.
