Social Media

Social Media

Undoubtedly, social media has transformed society in several ways. It has become positive as individuals can now connect with others worldwide and deepen their relationships. Nonetheless, Amedie (2015) argues that social media negatively influences society. It results in psychological problems, breaks family bonds, and results in criminal activities. First, Amedie (2015) claims that social media has fostered a fake sense of online “links” and artificial friendships, resulting in psychological and emotional issues. In addition, the author notes that since the advent of social media, people no longer visit each other but even conduct family meetings online (Amedie, 2015). This has broken families, family bonds, and people’s interpersonal skills. Consequently, people end up depressed because they cannot share their issues freely online.

Secondly, Amedie (2015) says social media has resulted in the rise of criminal activities such as social media cyberbullying and terrorism. Notably, teenagers wrongly use social media platforms, which have changed into bullying zones (Amedie, 2015). Consequently, cyberbullying has led to several suicidal ideation and deaths among youths. Further, social media has resulted in increased terrorist activities. It causes psychological problems like anxiety and depression that might trigger people to criminal activities. Therefore, according to Amedie (2015), social media is bad because it has several negatives for society.

Nonetheless, the opposing argument is that social media has a lot of positives and benefits for society. It deepens relationships, connects people, promotes learning, and empowers businesses. Therefore, social media is a positive thing for society.
