Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Arthurian tales are pieces of medieval literature characterized by heroism and chivalry. One example of Arthurian medieval literature is the poem ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.’ The poem details the Green Knight, Sir Gawain, and King Arthur’s encounters involving a beheading game (Abrams et al. 183). In the poem, the Gawain poet took nearly 100 lines to describe the Green Knight’s appearance from line 136. Numerous details of the Green Knight stood out to me; first, the consistency of the green color in the Knight and his horse’s appearance. Secondly, the lack of armament, excluding the axe, in addition to his arrogance and courageous attitude; and thirdly, despite his physique, how the poet describes him as a handsome fellow in line 142 also stood out. All these details stood out to me because they influence the Green KKnight’sportrayal in the poem.

The poet devoted much of the poem to illustrating the Green appearance. The appearance includes physique, clothing, ornaments, and the horse’s appearance. The poet did this to help establish the heroism and chivalry themes expected of Arthurian tales. In this case, the Green Knight was portrayed as a fearsome being whom Sir Gawain had to face to save the honor.
