Simone de Beauvoir-Freedom and Liberty for Women
Simone de Beauvoir was a famous novelist, feminist, writer and thinker, and existentialist theorist in her own right. Beauvoir believed women needed freedom and liberty, and they should not be considered as others or inferior beings but as different and unique beings. From the pictures and the interview, she believed in feminism and cherished modest dressing styles or fashion. In fact, from the images, Beauvoir dressed for the occasion; she perfectly matched her hairstyle and hairband with her attire and sunglasses. Most importantly, most of her dresses were modestly long, and they covered her hands up to her neck. Therefore, if Beauvoir could time-travel to our current society, she would perceive contemporary fashion, especially for ladies and women, as strange or distasteful, even if she had wished for a contradictory fashion that mirrors freedom. The current fashion where women dress almost half-naked, their boobs are almost out, and the short dress plus booty short-wearing trends would irritate Beauvoir.
The current trends she would approve of are work and marriage. Beauvoir has often advocated for freedom and women’s equality and liberty, especially in marriage. She states in her article that “women are never inferior to men but just different. While men shine in some areas, women do so in others” ( Dini, 2017). This meant that if time could travel, she would be so impressed with the current marriage where there is little to no male dominance. Women have more privileges and freedoms and can work and provide for their families. The other aspect that she would approve of is work. Beauvoir states in the interview, “If women would work and work would be available for everybody, that would be a true liberation for women” (Philosophical Matters, 2017). Thus, if time-traveled to the current trends, she would approve of it because women can work not in specific low-paying areas but in all career lines and are paid equally as men. Women no longer stay home to care for children. They go to work, earn, and provide for their families. This would impress Beauvoir because this was the true liberation she had always desired.
