Servant Leadership – A Challenging Tip of Truly Human Leadership
According to Buss (2020), the nine tips of human leadership include using common sense, assuming difficulty, applying first aid, getting serious, starting simply, vowing to share sacrifice, succeeding in business, checking your motives, and tapping into visioning. As a conscious servant leader, I would struggle to tap into visioning the most. Tapping into visioning includes setting a clear direction for the followers and ensuring that they focus their actions on meeting the goals linked to the vision. As a conscious servant leader, I would focus on the elements of servant leadership. One of the elements is being concerned with genuinely serving followers (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2016). Therefore, I would ensure that my actions meet the interests of my followers. This can make it hard for me to tap into visioning because the needs of the organization and followers, such as employees, may vary, thus making it hard to determine the organization’s long-term goals.
Visioning also requires making tough decisions, such as firing employees who do not meet the organization’s expectations because they may limit their ability to reach the vision. As a result, this would make it hard for me as a conscious leader to decide to fire an employee without creating the perception that I am putting the organization’s interests first. The second element is using power to convince and persuade followers to get things done and give followers the freedom to be successful (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2016). As a conscious servant leader, I would focus on collaborating with my followers to meet the organization’s goals. Tapping into visioning would be hard when working with the employees as a team because it would be hard for me to pressure them to meet the organization’s goals. Setting a vision for them would also imply that I am superior, thus limiting free collaboration in line with conscious servant leadership.
