Introduction
Language forms the basis of any human interaction. Individuals acquainted with a specific language can effectively share and exchange ideas and information that helps them reach a consensus on a particular topic or solve issues affecting them. Some languages, such as the mother language, develop easily, while others require an individual to undertake several classes to help them understand how to manipulate the language to convey the intended meaning. Language development is a process that begins in the early stages of life. When a child is in the womb, their language develops by listening to the voice of their mother and the people and noise around them. At ten months, a child starts differentiating different sounds and babbles when spoken to. As toddlers learn how to talk and convey meaning, they incorporate meaningful gestures that help them to communicate. In this respect, I have had numerous experiences that have impacted my language development throughout life. My education journey has been instrumental since it offered different learning platforms. Language has been manifested throughout my life and profession, and my experiences will help me mentor my future students.
Part One: Self-Identification
As I reflect on my language self-identification, vast factors impact my identity. I am a Jamaican by birth. My parents and our entire family are all Jamaican. However, our family relocated to the United States, where we have settled for many years, and, as such, we have acquired U.S. citizenship. This movement and settling have had significant meaning and impact on my identification and language development because I had to learn a new language other than my first language. Since I was very young, it was easy for me to learn a new language. My parents settled in the Bronx, where I grew up, and attended my pre-school and high school education. The Bronx was founded in 1914 and was the last county to be incorporated into New York State (New York State, n.d). This has had a significant impact on me because I have witnessed these historical events. The Bronx covers an area of 57 square miles. In 2021, the estimated population in the Bronx was 1,424,948 people. The majority of the people are Hispanic, estimated at 56.4%. The other population comprises Asians, Blacks, and Whites ( NYU Furman Center, 2024). Having spent my entire life in the Bronx, I have been exposed to people who speak different languages since the population in my residential area and neighborhood in the Bronx converse in different languages. Also, English speakers’ accents have different variations, which has influenced my learning development.
I have interacted with people from different cultures and backgrounds. Still, I vowed to maintain my cultural identity and background because my cultural background has significantly influenced who I am and my profession. I am an educator, a Christian, and a family-oriented person. My connection with my Jamaican family has inspired my teaching skills and encouraged me to become a strong and great teacher. We celebrate and hold most events together, especially on important holidays like Christmas and New Year. These events allow us to share ideas on improving ourselves and achieving higher limits. Christianity has enabled me to uphold significant values personally and as an educator. I have developed interactive and respective skills with all individuals. Respect is a fundamental value among Jamaicans. I value and respect the differences among my colleagues and students and learn effective ways of interacting without offending them. I have high respect for everybody, and I even take off my shoes when I visit people to maintain the house’s cleanliness and to recognize the owners’ efforts in keeping the house tidy.
The Bronx is my home and a source of identity and belonging. I have attended different education levels in Bronx’s schools, from pre-school to elementary, middle, and high school. I have interacted with different people who have impacted my language. I always learn to acknowledge our differences and work towards settling our differences and achieving a common goal. I have had my education journey in a public education system, which has modeled my desire to be a public school educator. I understand most public school students’ struggles, including limited access to resources and funding. Hence, with hands-on experience, I believe I can be instrumental in helping students reach their potential. My schooling experience has prompted me to acquire effective skills and identify suitable teaching strategies and pedagogy that align with the student’s learning needs.
Moreover, my parents have modeled my character and personality. I am a giver and a caring person. My parents always taught us the virtue of giving and sharing the little we have with my siblings. I anticipate demonstrating my giving nature to the community, including volunteering to teach in public schools to help students achieve their academic goals. I also desire to mentor students using my experiences, encouraging them for a better future. I will be compassionate to my future students by understanding their needs and deploying the resources needed to address the needs that hinder their learning experiences. For instance, food will be offered to homes where students hardly get a healthy diet. I am also a trustworthy person. I hope my colleagues will believe in my contribution; I also hope that my colleagues and I will collaborate to achieve excellence in students’ performances. In addition, my family believes in my profession, so I wish to demonstrate the same to my students. I will encourage them that no matter their struggle, they have a chance to learn and become productive in the future. I will also encourage students to appreciate their language differences and use them as opportunities to grow and achieve their potential.
