SecureWorks Case Study

SecureWorks Case Study

Michael Cote’s redefinition of the business was important to ensure the young company did not collapse. He believed that there was good potential in internet security that SecureWorks technology would tap into and succeed. The company had everything required to succeed, and only a focused leader could redefine the business, such as Michael’s mission. For instance, the company had no working capital issues because of sufficient cash and a strong investor group (Hess, 2011). However, its focus on sales and marketing was ill-informed and required complete redefinition. Thus, it was vital for him to ensure the business was redefined. By redefining the business, Michael Cote was trying to achieve various aspects. First, he was trying to accomplish the long-term survival of the company. According to Reeves et al. (2016), when a business lacks a long-term plan, it is likely to fail when faced with competitive pressure from rival firms. Therefore, through the redefinition of the business, Michael was trying to secure the company’s long-term survival. Second, redefining the business was aimed at getting the right people to drive the agenda of the business while operating in the right positions. As described in the case study, Michael wanted the right people on the bus in the right seats. Notably, this led him to interview various employees to ensure they work in the right positions where they can deliver. Indeed, this redefinition proved worthwhile because he could identify the problem ailing the sales department as one of the workers confirmed that he did not have experience in running sales. Essentially, without the right people in the correct positions, it is unlikely that a business will succeed (Boon et al., 2019). Thus, Michael had to bring in new talent to positions that were relevant to the business.
