Clinical Issue of Interest

The clinical issue of interest is exploring the impact of stigma and discrimination on the misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis of mental health disorders and treatments for adolescents and young adult minorities.

PICOT Question

In adolescents and young adult minorities (P), how does stigma and discrimination (I) compared to no stigma and discrimination (C) affect the misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis of mental health disorders and access to appropriate treatments (O) over the period of 10 years (T)?

Search Results and Strategies

I conducted a search on the Walden Library databases using the keywords “mental health,” “stigma,” “discrimination,” “misdiagnosis,” “underdiagnosis,” “adolescents,” and “minorities.” Initially, the search returned a large number of articles (over 1,000), many of which were not directly relevant to the clinical issue of interest. To streamline my search and make the search more effective, I applied Boolean operators and supplemented the PICO(T) components with specific terms.

With these terms combined with AND and OR operators, the search results became more focused and relevant. As a result, it returned about 50 articles. However, some of these articles were still not directly related to the clinical issue or were systematic reviews that were excluded based on the assignment instructions. Moreover, I improved the credibility as well as seeking efficiency of my research through;

Therefore, such approaches allowed me to identify four peer-reviewed articles that address this clinical problem specifically; they will be used as a basis for further analysis and development of evidence-based practice (Castillo, 2019; Jimenez et al., 2022; Jörns-Presentati et al., 2021; Lu et al., 2021).

Question

To Prepare:
• Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
• Review the materials offering guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.

Searching Databases – Mental Health

• Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least two different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
• Review the Resources for guidance and develop a PICO(T) question of interest to you for further study. It is suggested that an Intervention-type PICOT question be developed as these seem to work best for this course.

Post a brief description of your clinical issue of interest. (MENTAL HEALTH-stigma/ discrimination leads to mis/underdiagnosing of mental health disorders/treatments for adolescents and young adult minorities) This clinical issue will remain the same for the entire course and will be the basis for the development of your PICOT question. Describe your search results in terms of the number of articles returned on original research and how this changed as you added search terms using your Boolean operators. Finally, explain strategies you might make to increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on your PICO(T) question. Be specific and provide examples.
