Science and Technology Development – Airport Passenger Electronic Scanner

Electronic scanner impact on airport security

Electronic scanners were introduced in 2007 to improve security and reduce queues at airports. Although there have been many complaints about their use by passengers, they have significantly improved the security within the airport and on planes. A failed attempt to blow up a plane using an explosive embedded in a passenger’s underwear in Detroit sparked widespread use of airport electronic scanners.

Electronic scanner impacts on hijacking

It is almost impossible to prevent plane hijacks using electronic scanning technology. Most hijacks are often commandeered by carefully chosen individuals who may not raise an eyebrow. For instance, in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, none of the would-be hijackers would be detected by airport security despite passing through rigorous exercise. Preventing hijacking requires intensified airport security checks and also intelligence gathering on potential hijackers. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) collaborates with airport authorities in that respect.

Investments in security measures impacts

Enhanced airport security technology led to privacy concerns among passengers. In one such eye-opening incident, the media published a photo of TSA’s lab research head, Susan Hallowell, undergoing scanning, and the photo appeared rather nude (Moskvitch, 2015). To dispense these concerns, airports have adopted alternative machines with limited revealing features. The new e-scanners show a cartoon-like body that does not show one’s real body. Research shows that most passengers do not mind the security checks as long as it assures them of safety despite a few privacy concerns. Only a tiny percentage of passengers are concerned with privacy intrusion from new airport security technology.

Question

Airport Passenger Electronic Scanner

How well do you think Science and Technology (S&T) is performing? After 10 years, the most visible symbol of S&T’s development efforts is the airport passenger electronic scanner.

In 150-250 words, answer each of the following questions:

Has the electronic scanner improved airport security? Why or why not?
Will the electronic scanner prevent another hijacking? Why or why not?
Is the investment made in added security measures worth the impact on passengers?
