Sampling Techniques and Data Collection

Sampling Techniques and Data Collection

The knowledge of sampling techniques and data collection has had a significant impact on my personal and professional life. Personally, I find myself more attentive to various actions and behaviors displayed by other people. For instance, whenever I am in a public space, I find myself observing certain things such as the number of people I consider as couples, how they relate to each other, and their facial expressions. Furthermore, I have a nephew who was diagnosed with autism a while back, and I have been really interested in learning more about the disorder. As a result, I often find myself observing children at random. When I spend some time with them and realize that they have some behaviors that seem to conform to autistic behaviors, I think that they might have autism. I begin to record the number of times that I have encountered a potentially autistic child, as is common in behavioral measures (Psy 305, n.d).

I believe that my observations might be wrong, and this has left me wondering how often we make observations and make wrongful conclusions that confirm our already-established biases and perceptions based on the observations made. This is likely to affect our findings when the observation method is used to collect data. I tend to analyze various types of research to determine the possibility of wrongful findings based on wrongful methodologies used to conduct the research. In general, my observation and analytical skills have greatly improved as a result of learning more about data collection and sampling techniques.

Question

Sampling Techniques and Data Collection

During Module 3, we discussed sampling techniques and data collection. Think about how you can use this information in your daily life, both personally and professionally.

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Week 7:

Provide an example of how you are using a more critical lens when presented with information. Share the questions that you are asking because of what you now know about sampling techniques and data collection.

Week 8:

Now that you have a better understanding of what research methods are, reflect on what you wrote at the beginning of and midway through this course. How has your understanding changed? Provide an example of how research methods apply in your discipline. How might you be able to use what you learned in this course in your life, personally and professionally?
