Safety Measures at CVS Health Utilization Department
Generally, patients’ health information is protected under state and federal security and privacy laws, including Protected Health Information (PHI) and Personally Identifiable Information (PII). The PHI and PII are expected to be handled and protected confidentially (CVS Health, 2023a). International privacy laws also apply to some patient information.
At CVS Health, all documentation requires truthful and accurate entries as part of the condition of CVS Health’s employment. In addition, all personal identifiers are removed before information sharing, and the PHI and PII are shared with the fewest people possible (CVS Health, 2023b). Employees are also expected not to view patient information out of curiosity and to dispose of copies of PHI and PII documents if they are unnecessary. Employees must also keep confidential information and documents out of sight and secure them (CVS Health, 2023b). For instance, employees in our department are expected never to leave PHI and PII active on fax machines, printers, computers, or any other accessible places.
Also, the PHI and PII that are transmitted outside the organization are required to be encrypted. In my department, all emails must be sent through secured emails, and all the PHI information that is not needed is expected to be shredded. Violating the above requirements can lead to disciplinary measures such as termination of employment, even on the first offense. Some violations may lead to criminal and/or civil penalties for the offenders.
Overall, every employee at CVS Health must adhere to the organization’s recent professional licensure, registration, certification, and code of ethics. This is to ensure that every employee acts professionally and ethically. Should there be any detection or suspicion of PHI and PII disclosure, one is expected to report to the Privacy Office despite whether the disclosure was a mistake or unintentional.
