Role in Conflict Management as a Nurse Leader or Manager

Role in Conflict Management as a Nurse Leader or Manager

Addressing nurse disagreements on the unit is critical for a nurse leader or manager to maintain a harmonious and productive work environment. To begin, I would take a proactive approach by encouraging open communication and establishing clear expectations for professional behavior among team members. One critical part of resolving a disagreement between two nurses on the unit is to protect and promote patient safety and quality of care (Labrague & Obeidat, 2021). If a problem does emerge, I would take a methodical approach to resolving it.

In the event of a conflict, my first move would be to meet with each nurse personally. I would attentively listen to their opinions during these private discussions, allowing them to share their concerns and sentiments openly. My goal would be to stay objective, empathic, and nonjudgmental while providing a safe space for them to share. Following that, I would thoroughly detail the issue. Documentation helps ensure that the details of the situation are accurately recorded without any bias (Letellier & Eppich, 2015). This record should include a full explanation of what was discussed at each individual meeting, any agreements reached, and a timeline of the dispute resolution process. This material is critical for future reference if the dispute continues or worsens.

If the issue persists after the initial meetings and attempts at resolution, I would consider involving a mediator or conflict resolution specialist if one is available within the healthcare institution. Their knowledge and experience might be useful in enhancing discussion and reaching mutually accepted solutions. Furthermore, if the conflict endangers patient safety or the general operation of the unit, I will not hesitate to escalate the situation to my supervisor. I would follow up with the affected nurses and observe their interactions over time to see if the disagreement had been addressed. I’d look for indicators of better teamwork, better communication, and less tension. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions with the nurses and the team as a whole can aid in determining the status of conflict resolution.
