Instrumental Values

Instrumental values refer to behavioral patterns that are a means to achieve an end goal but not the end goal by themselves. These values are shaped by an individual’s personality and character traits, which go a long way toward helping individuals attain terminal goals. Having conducted a self-assessment, I found that my top three values are open-mindedness, capability, and ambition. Open-mindedness means being open to learning new ways of doing things, even if it differs from what I am used to. Ambition means pursuing one’s goals without being limited by any shortcomings. Competence, on the other hand, is the ability to perform tasks effectively. As per Rokeach’s value survey, open-mindedness is ranked third among instrumental values, indicating that it carries significant weight towards attaining ideal servant leadership qualities. On the other hand, ambition is ranked eleventh in the values hierarchy. Finally, competence/ capability is ranked fifteenth in the values hierarchy.

Open-mindedness, ambition, and competence are vital values to ideal leadership. Firstly, open-mindedness is key to sparking an imaginative, curious, and perceptive mind (Dirk Van Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). Such a value system is critical, especially when operating in a field requiring innovation and creativity. For instance, to establish concrete leadership in the information technology (IT) sector, one should be open to new experiences to improve individual and team performance. On the other hand, ambition spurs productivity and an entrepreneurial spirit (Dirk Van Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). Ambitious leaders are an asset to the organization because they are willing to embrace challenging tasks to achieve organizational goals. My third value is competence, which revolves around the desire to perform above societal standards and control people and resources. To that end, competent leaders can work autonomously and still deliver good results.

Terminal Values

Terminal values represent the end-states or a goal someone would like to achieve in their lifetime. My top three terminal values include family security, world peace, and happiness. Happiness is the emotional state of joy and contentment. On the other hand, family security refers to a sense of belonging and being on good terms with relatives. Thirdly, world peace has a calming effect that allows people to coexist despite difficult circumstances. As per Rokeach’s survey, happiness/contentedness ranks first among all values. My other terminal value, family security, is ranked third as per Rokeach’s value survey. Finally, world peace, which constitutes a world free of war and conflict, is ranked fifth among all values.

Happiness, one of my terminal values, is key to successful leadership. Dirk Van Dierendonck and Patterson (2010) argue that happiness is transmissible and that happy leaders create a happy group of followers. Organizational leaders should look at followers as hired hearts and not hired hands to ensure that happiness is spread across the organization. On the other hand, family security plays a key role in fostering one’s social and economic well-being. For instance, someone from a wealthy family with massive assets may inherit family property or work in a family company to improve their economic status (Dirk Van Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). The wealth acquired may be used to engage in charitable interventions, a component of servant leadership. Such an individual may also work for free in an organization that promotes the common good. Lastly, when there is world peace, people may coexist and live in a salient environment despite unfavorable external circumstances. An effective leader takes advantage of world peace to foster relationships.
