Responses to Ethical Issues – Firing Carlotta
The ethical issues relayed in “Firing Carlotta.”
The ethical issues in the case were lying about a relationship with a candidate and falsifying a job application. Carlotta pretended that she did not know that the candidate who was considered to fill the vacant position was the friend she had earlier requested her supervisor to hire, but her proposal had been declined because of the company’s policy prohibiting the hiring of friends and relatives of current employees. Carlotta focused on meeting her interest, which was getting her friend a job, which is why she failed to notify the supervisor that the new employee was her friend. On the other hand, Carlotta’s friend falsified her job application to secure the job because she knew that providing the right information would make the hiring team make the connection between her and Carlotta, hence limiting her chances of being hired.
Should Carlotta have been terminated for her biased hiring practice?
In my opinion, Carlotta should have been fired for her biased hiring practice because she was already aware of the company’s policy against hiring friends and relatives of employees but chose to ignore the rules to favor her friend. This shows that she puts her interests first over the company’s interests and could repeat the same thing if she gets a chance.
Personal guidelines for my own responses to situations that raise ethical issues
Recognizing an ethical issue is the most important step in effectively eliminating such issues (Moriarty, 2021; Palmer, 2015). I would recognize ethical issues by determining whether employee conduct aligns with the company’s policies and procedures. The appropriate way that I would consider in responding to the issue is discussing the employees’ unethical behavior with them to ensure that they are aware of their ethical violation and get a justification from them on why they acted unethically. Their response would then be used to determine the appropriate course of action. For instance, if a sales agent is falsifying a sales report to show management that he is performing well to get promoted or get benefits and incentives, I would review the company’s policies and procedures regulating employee reports. I would then call the employee and read the policy and practice prohibiting company data falsification and allowing him to defend his actions before disciplining him.

Question
The purpose of this discussion is to consider how ethics relate to the hiring practices in small businesses, and to begin consideration of how to properly respond to such situations.
Refer to the reading “Firing Carlotta” and the readings on ethics as well, which address the role and importance of ethical behaviour internally and the strategies for ensuring that an organization is prepared to deal appropriately with ethical issues.
For your initial post in this discussion, summarize the ethical issues relayed in “Firing Carlotta.” Consider the case as presented and discuss whether or not you feel Carlotta should have been terminated for her biased hiring practice. Next, develop and describe personal guidelines for your own responses to situations that raise ethical issues.
Your guidelines should include both how you will recognize ethical issues when they arise and how you will think through appropriate ways to respond. Include in your post one example situation, either from your own experience or one that you could imagine occurring, in which you demonstrate how your guidelines work. Your initial post should be in the range of 200–350 words.
