Response – Promoting Professionalism, Ethics, and Collaboration in Nursing Practice
Responding to Emily Wright
Hello,
Great work with your post. The thought process around the competencies demonstrates a balance between professionalism and ethics in nursing. Granting pay to someone who worked overtime is ethically and legally right and demonstrates dignity to the worker. Verbal abuse remains unacceptable at the point of work. However, interpersonal differences may make one culpable of tolerating verbal abuse (Kural & Kovacs, 2022). Transparent reporting systems must be established to facilitate the reporting of such instances. At the departmental level, dispute resolution should be activated to integrate the root cause of the abuse. On short staffing, I presume that it is a system problem that can be addressed through system-level resolutions. In ethical and professional nursing care, issues include staff favoritism, firing and hiring decisions based on friendship, and not providing all patient information during shift reports. Healthcare systems should thus strive to inculcate professionalism and ethicality among their staff members.

Hello,
This is a great post. Your thoughts on the competencies demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the topics. The assignment gave insights into the normative leadership and management principles underlining nursing operationalizations in healthcare. As captured in your post, teamwork and willingness to learn are characteristics of progressive nursing practice. In collaborative paradigms, teamwork fosters collective decision-making and has been associated with improved outcomes (Baek et al., 2023). It is also accurate that evidence-based practice improves the clinical and health outcomes of the patients. It ensures that the most current and best therapeutic modalities are applied to the patient. Collaborative care and professionalism are also key to effective and efficient healthcare. As reflected in the post, the course provided insights into the significance of professionalism and collaborative care. They facilitate interpersonal communications and joint decision-making processes and contribute to improved care outcomes. Nursing agencies, such as ANA, foster professionalism and improve nursing care. The course has also provided insights into the ethical standards and legal frameworks that enhance healthcare.

Consider the examples provided below and describe how you would handle the experiences.
A manager is not granting pay to someone who worked overtime.

Response – Promoting Professionalism, Ethics, and Collaboration in Nursing Practice
I would first ask the manager why they feel the nurse should not be paid. I would then handle this by explaining to the manager that legally and ethically, people should be paid for work that they completed and I would advocate for the nurse ensuring they receive pay for the work they complete.
A nurse manager tolerating verbal abuse of another nurse.
Verbal abuse in the workplace is unacceptable and I would meet with both staff members to learn the exact instances of abuse. I would explain to the nurse that this is not acceptable and that if it continues to happen they will be removed from the team.
Constantly short staffing the unit when there is high census.
I would handle this situation by seeking more staff members with something such as a hiring fair, I would ensure the unit is staffed to a ratio that is safe for both staff and nurses. It is unethical to be staffing the unit short, as patients are entitled to appropriate care that may not happen with not even staff.
A nurse not providing all of the patients information during shift report.
I would address this situation by having a staff meeting reminding all nurses of what should be included in a shift report. If the issue continues I would have a meeting with the nurse to address the reasoning for her actions and explain what should be required in a change of shift report.
Favoring one staff over others.
Every staff member should be treated equally, so I would remind the management that we are obligated to show all staff and nurses the same respect.
Making a hiring or firing decision based on friendship.
When hiring or firing someone, friendship cannot be considered. What matters is a persons skill, education, and ability to perform the job. Hiring or firing based on friendship is not ethical and I would ensure this is not a practice taking place.

Competencies:
- Integrate leadership and management principles and attributes in nursing practice.
I gained new knowledge through this competency by doing the assignment pointing out which attributes are important to me in nursing, such as teamwork and a willingness to learn, as well as explaining how they can be showed. This will impact my nursing career because it is important to know what and who you want to be and what attributes you would like to have in your nursing practice.
- Use evidence-based practice to guide clinical reasoning and clinical judgement as a basis for nursing decision making.
I have learned the importance of EBP and how it is a valuable tool in not only learning but providing the best are for clients possible. I have learned how tor search for EBP. I have learned that clinical judgment is an important skill to acquire over practice to make critical decision for clients.
- Collaborate in healthcare delivery systems settings for improved patient outcomes.
I have learned that collaboration in the healthcare system is critical to provide the best care for clients possible, teamwork allows for things to get done the best most efficient way possible. I gained knowledge in this competency by researching for discussion questions.
- Demonstrate principles of professional identity and professionalism for the nurse within the context of regulatory and practice standards.
I have learned how to demonstrate principles of professional identity as it is important to have a professional identity through the work of nursing. Principles of professional identity may include teamwork, leadership, communication, and humility. Within the context of regulatory and practice standards these traits help to maintain the code of ethics as well as the standards of practice.
- Analyze agencies that influence the provision of nursing care in the healthcare system.
There are many agencies that influence nursing care in the healthcare system I have learned these may include each states board of nursing, which lay out the practices for each state. There is also the American Nurses Association which is involved in setting standards of practice in nursing.
- Formulate decisions based on the legal and ethical underpinnings that improve healthcare.
I have learned more regarding the ethical standards that improve nursing and through out this course have gained a better understanding of what they all mean and examples in practice such as advocacy, fidelity, and nonmaleficence for example. It is important to use the ethical standards when making all decisions in nursing. I have learned more about the legal principles regarding nursing which is very important to have a good understanding of to not violate a patients rights.
