Response – Mixed-Methods Approach to Eyewitness Testimony Research
Responding to Aaron Torres
Hello,
This is a great post. You have done well to justify your mixed-method approach to studying factors of influence on eyewitness testimony. Combined qualitative observation with quantitative measures, such as the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R), provides one comprehensive way of assessing eyewitness testimonies for confidence and accuracy. I find particularly good the methodology of recording verbal and non-verbal communication through interviews allows the researcher to understand the participant’s assessment of the situation from his or her psychological state. I am impressed with the other qualitative methods of theme analysis of interview transcripts you’ve mentioned. You can contextualize your data even further by exploring the themes and patterns that individual observations were not able to provide, especially with regard to how aspects affect eyewitness accuracy.
A valuable source for enhancing the process of qualitative analysis is the article by Braun and Clarke (2019) entitled “Using Thematic Analysis in Psychology,” which describes a clear and comprehensive framework of thematic analysis in qualitative research. Your approach is sound, and incorporating this technique would add to the reliability and validity of your research by providing a more comprehensive analysis of the interviews.
