Response – Carl Rogers’s Theory of Personality

Response to Makaela Conway

Hello Makaela,

You did a commendable job discussing Carl Rogers’s theory of personality, which highlights people’s natural kindness and desire for self-actualization. Comparing Kelly’s PCT with Carl Rogers’s person-centered therapy, it is clear that although both theories of therapy support the notion of personal control, they approach it from different perspectives. Another crucial differentiating factor with Rogers’ approach is that it focuses on developing therapeutic relationships and encouraging emotional growth by creating a caring and supportive atmosphere. This is more analytical in Kelly’s PCT, which concerns how people think when creating their worlds (Blowers & O’Connor, 2019). Although Rogers’ method may be more perceptible in clinical practice due to the emphasis on empathic understanding, the richness of the description of personality that is met in Kelly’s approach appears to be more useful in the context of research and cognitive therapy (Joseph, 2021).

With regard to the analysis of personality from a diverse perspective in the context of modern personality psychology, the system that can be considered as more universal is that of personal constructs by Kelly, While the method by Roger is significant and unique since it can be applied within the contexts of therapeutic interventions aimed at personality change for the better in view of individual development and psychological wellbeing.
