Research Methods in Psychology
The treatment of interest to me is yoga, and my area of interest is the use of yoga for treating pain. When researching this treatment, one would prefer using scientific approaches over non-scientific approaches because when scientific methods are used in a study, the results are more credible (Erol, 2017). It is important to note that scientific practices are objective and standardized, thus giving reliable results. On the other hand, non-scientific research relies on non-scientific mechanisms like history and arts. Even though they offer rich information on a phenomenon, they rely mainly on theories and stories that sometimes are not verifiable (Erol, 2017). Therefore, if one were to research the effectiveness of treatments like yoga on stress, the results would be more credible and reliable if a scientific approach like qualitative research is used. Subsequently, this would be better compared to dependence on the history of Yoga treatment.
The research question that would guide this study is: Can yoga reduce hospital stays among patients with chronic non-communicable diseases?
The hypothesis is that Yoga will reduce hospital stays among patients with chronic illness by over 50%.
The independent variable in this research study is yoga, and the dependent variable is the hospital stay among patients with chronic non-communicable diseases (Passer, 2021).

Operationally, the dependent variable is the variable that is measured in an experiment. For instance, hospital stays among chronically ill patients with non-communicable diseases are a dependent variable (Passer, 2021). An independent variable is a variable that is manipulated and has an impact on the dependent variable.
Suppose the results support the hypothesis that yoga can reduce hospital stays among the targeted patients. In that case, the results will be very important for medical experts because they will consider incorporating yoga into their plan of care for their patients (Passer, 2021). Moreover, it would trigger the desire for a further research study on yoga and its role in pain relief.

Question
P300:
Imagine that you are a researcher with unlimited funds to study the effectiveness of a treatment of your choice. You can choose what the treatment is and the changes you hope the treatment causes.

Please respond to the following:
Why would a scientific approach be preferable to a nonscientific approach?
What would be your research question and hypothesis?
What would be your independent and dependent variable?
How would you operationally define your independent and dependent variables?
If results support your hypothesis, how might this be useful to professionals working with patients or clients?
