Religion and Theology

Religion and Theology

One key question to Christian doctrine is whether Jesus is the only way to God. To answer this question, first, it is worth noting the uniqueness of Christ among other religions. For example, Jesus unequivocally claimed divinity, as seen in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one” (New International Version, 2011): Religion and Theology.

This is in addition to His statements like “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. This differs from other religious figures like Mohammed in Islam and Buddha in Buddhism, whereby they are only claimed to be prophets, enlightened teachers, or guides— not once are they claimed to be divine.

As such, there must be a unique connection between Jesus and God that the other individuals in the other religions did not have (Craig, 2010). Secondly, among all the other religions, Jesus is the only one who died and resurrected. Consequently, He proved to have power over death, which is something no other religious leader has done.

However, today’s world is pluralistic, with numerous religions being celebrated. Therefore, declaring that the only way to God is through Jesus is not proper. I believe that there is no exclusive way to God as long as people believe in a supreme being that is all good and divine. This is because before Christianity was spread globally, other parts of the world had their own religions with their own creation stories.

For example, in Kenya, before the missionaries, all the tribes in the country had their own “god” with their own creation story (Harries, 2009). This applied to all the other African countries. I cannot blame other people who have different religions because the religion they know is based on where they were born and raised.

Claiming that the only way to God is through Jesus would mean that people who have other religions and have no idea about Jesus are doomed. God would not be this cruel to create and put people in different parts of the world, deny them knowledge of Jesus, and then condemn them to hell for not knowing.

In conclusion, claiming that Jesus is the only way to God and believing in His uniqueness are intrinsic to Christians. However, this does not mean that other religions are wrong because they do not have Jesus. Rather, our religion teaches love, grace and humility; it tells us about respecting diversity and being culturally sensitive to other people’s religions as long as they are good and divine.
