Relationship Between Health Behaviours and Health Outcomes

Relationship Between Health Behaviours and Health Outcomes

Health behaviors and health outcomes are related since a person’s choices and behaviors have a direct influence on their health. Healthy practices like physical exercise, consuming a healthy diet, and refraining from bad habits such as the use of substances can help preserve health and reduce the risk of acquiring chronic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes (Oster & Chaves, 2023). On the other hand, negative health behaviors, including smoking, lack of physical exercise, and excessive use of alcohol, are likely to affect one’s health negatively, thereby shortening their life span. Health behaviors and outcomes are also influenced by various social determinants such as socioeconomic status and access to healthcare. The evaluation of health behaviors is vital in order to determine and enhance health status.

A perfect example of this relationship can be seen with smoking in the aspect of lung health. Smoking is one of the most proven unhealthy behaviors that contribute to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer diseases (Taucher et al., 2022). In medical sociology, reasons such as social stressors, marketing advertisers, and lack of adequate access to programs aimed at quitting smoking support the fact that people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have a higher tendency of smoking because of social stressors, marketing advertisers and lack of adequate access to programs aimed at quitting smoking. This illustrates how a particular unhealthy behavior, which is smoking in this case, can negatively impact health due to other social factors that encourage such behaviors. Therefore, reducing the prevalence of smoking through public health activities can have a large beneficial effect on health results.

In conclusion, health behaviors have a direct impact on health outcomes and are also influenced by personal and social factors. Healthy practices have a positive impact on one’s lifespan as they protect one from diseases. On the other hand, negative health practices have a negative impact that reduces the life expectancy of the individual. These relations are important to understand in medical sociology because they help us to use different knowledge about personal habits, social conditions, and health policies and understand their influence on overall health.
