Relationship Analysis

All relationships are strengthened by communication. By communicating, people express themselves and respond to others. Communication occurs in several ways, including verbal and non-verbal communication, all of which are seen in all relationships, including television programs’ depictions. One television program that displays different types of relationships is ‘Reservation Dogs,’ a program created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi and produced by FX Production, among other collaborations.

Summary

‘Reservation Dogs’ is a TV program about a group of Indigenous teens that focuses on their lives and those around them. The program is part drama and part comedy focusing on the teens; Bear Smallhill, Elora Danan, Willie Jack, and Cheese, who are living on a reservation in Oklahoma. The teens have a common goal: to leave the reservation, which is full of dead ends, and leaving provides them with a wide array of possibilities. As a result, the teens turn to crime, such as robbery, to obtain the funds to help them leave the reservation. Due to the storyline, numerous relationships are depicted in the program, including the relationship between friends and their family, neighbors, and everyone else in the program. The numerous types of relationships are depicted in the first episode of the program’s first season, which introduces the teens and the supporting characters that help establish the storyline. Also, the first episode introduces the program in a unique and captivating way, drawing viewers to the program.

Relationship Between Characters

The main relationship focused on in the program is the friendship between the four teenagers. The four teenagers go through a lot together, including their criminal activities, causing them to form a stronger bond and relationship. In every relationship, people communicate differently; the four use both verbal and nonverbal communication to converse, especially while interacting with criminals. As they sell the food truck they had stolen, Elora converses with Bear nonverbally by turning her posture to face him while raising her eyebrows to change her facial expression and maintaining eye contact to tell Bear to bargain with the criminal about the stolen items. In their friendship, they understand each other and can communicate easily without others catching on.

What transpired between the characters?

What transpired between the teenagers involved the theft and sale of food trucks. After the teenagers had gotten their profits from the food truck, they ran into the driver of the truck at a diner, learned that he had been fired, got divorced, and became bankrupt following the stealing of the truck. Consequently, Bear feels guilty for the damage their criminal activities had caused to the truck driver and tells the other three teenagers that they should return the money they had obtained. This caused a dispute as the others did not support the idea as they felt they worked hard for the money. Elora tells Bear that the money is their only way out of the reservation, which Willie Jack supports by raising a hand, and Elora walks away, indicating that she is done talking about that matter. Cheese and Bear are left looking dejected, but for different reasons.

Based on what you saw, is this a good or bad relationship?

From what I saw, their relationship is a good relationship. Rather than being dejected for being on the reservation, the teenagers hold each other down and are always there for each other. For instance, the police officer approaches them regarding the increase in criminal activities on the reservation; the teenagers use both verbal and nonverbal communication to warn each other by changing postures and gestures to prevent them from getting in trouble.

Improving The Relationship

The relationship could be improved by improving the characters listening and responding styles. Perceiving messages given influence how a person responds, which points to their listening styles. In the aforementioned altercation, Elora and Bear argued because Elora did not give Bear a chance to voice his idea clearly, because as soon as she heard what Bear said, she disagreed with him. A better listening and responding style rather than stomping off would promote understanding and strengthen the relationship.

How to Enhance the Relationship

The characters should listen and respond better to prevent arguments from erupting between them. With an even better communication process, the teen will be able to overcome any challenges they find on their way. With an enhanced relationship, the characters will not need to end the relationship as it may help them become better people, including changing their ways.

So, now that you’re knee-deep in communication, you get to examine a relationship. Because it is so much easier to analyze a relationship you’re not involved in, you’ll do that for this assignment. You are to watch a 1/2-hour television program of your choice.
