Reflections on the Influence of Policy by Amy Hanauer- Impact and Implications

I agree with the speaker’s perspective on public policy and its impact or importance in the lives of citizens because policy results from a response to specific issues in society. It communicates to the public about steps that the government intends to take passively or actively. For instance, policies that regulate the acceptable amount of waste that each company can generate and its management are critical for protecting the natural environment against pollution (Hanauer, 2015). Failure to create such policies would imply a lack of the government’s care for the natural environment.

In addition, such policies also determine the cleanliness of the natural environment, the quality of rain, and the air that everyone enjoys. Policies also determine the water that citizens drink. The effects of such policies conglomerate in the good or bad health of the citizens. The ripple effects of public policy do not end here. As explained, public policies tend to improve the lives of citizens by ensuring comfort, adequacy, and safety. The process of policy formulation continues endlessly. This is due to the need for constant review and assessment of already existing policies and those that are in the pipeline (Clickner, 2019).

Citizens are also engaged in the policymaking processes to ensure their opinions are highlighted. The process of engagement can take place through the various representatives or public campaigns. Failure to include citizens in these processes is likely to elicit protests from both large and small as well as thoughtful and ‘thoughtless’ individuals (Hanauer, 2015). The issue of money cannot be eliminated from public policy development. Funds are necessary for policy formulation and subsequent implementation. Lack of funds is likely to paralyze both processes. Thus, it is impossible to enjoy life without public policies.
