Achieving Program Outcome 2 Through Course Assignments

The course assignments and activities in NR511 have developed my ability to create a caring environment that supports quality health outcomes. For example, the comprehensive history assignment required compassionately exploring a patient’s symptoms and concerns during an interview. I learned to build rapport through active listening and emotionally intelligent responses. In addition, the assignment on analyzing guidelines taught me how evidence-based practices foster improved care. Learning to apply guidelines to individualize care plans allowed me to see how following best practices maximizes outcomes while still being person-centered (Engle et al., 2021).

Overall, every assignment developed my competency in providing holistic care centered on the patient’s needs and values. Performing thorough assessments, developing differential diagnoses, analyzing evidence to guide care plans, and reflecting on my clinical reasoning strengthen my ability to partner with patients in making decisions that lead to the best possible outcomes. I feel confident that the knowledge and skills gained in this course will enable me to consistently create caring environments as an advanced practice nurse.

Achieving AACN Essentials Competency 2.5 Through Course Assignments

The course activities and assignments have significantly developed my competency in AACN Essentials Domain 2.5: Develop a plan of care (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). For instance, the SOAP note assignment required formulating an evidence-based plan to address a patient’s health concerns. I had to synthesize assessment findings, diagnostic results, and clinical guidelines to determine appropriate interventions. Developing the plan challenged me to consider the patient’s preferences and needs in addition to best practices. The assignment emphasized shared decision-making by having me explain the rationale for my recommendations and providing patient education to promote adherence.

Additionally, care plans in the clinical practicum allowed me to gain experience in individualizing interventions based on patients’ unique factors. I learned how care coordination, referrals, and follow-up help support optimal outcomes. My clinical preceptor gave feedback on how I could improve at considering social determinants of health and incorporating health promotion into plans. Through assignments and the clinical practicum, I have significantly expanded my ability to holistically develop person-centered care plans as expected of an advanced practice nurse.

Achieving NONPF Competency NP 4.2 Through Course Assignments

Multiple course activities have helped me develop competency in integrating best evidence into practice, as outlined in NONPF Domain 4.2 (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). For instance, the assignment on analyzing clinical practice guidelines required appraising evidence quality and weighing benefits versus potential harms of recommendations. By examining how guidelines are created, I gained skills in critically evaluating the strength of evidence. Also, writing evidence-based SOAP notes expanded my ability to apply guidelines and the latest research findings to clinical decisions. Formulating differential diagnoses prompted me to analyze evidence on the accuracy of diagnostic modalities and the predictive value of assessment findings.

Additionally, precepted clinical experiences allowed me to witness how expert NPs consistently integrate current best evidence and their own clinical expertise into their reasoning process. My preceptor often shared recent studies that shaped her practice and taught me strategies to stay updated through journals and professional organizations. Through assignments, clinical, and preceptor modeling, I have significantly improved my competency in utilizing the best available evidence, rather than outdated practices or biased opinions, to optimize care as expected of an advanced practice nurse.
