Five Skills I Have Obtained Through the General Education Courses

Delegation skills are one of the skills I have obtained through my general education course that will make me successful at this job. According to Barr & Picton (2022), delegation is a crucial management skill because it is applied in planning, organizing, and controlling. The assistant manager’s job requires delegation skills to allocate tasks effectively to people within the organization. The second skill is communication skills. I need communication skills to communicate effectively with customers and staff within the organization. I also need communication skills to create personalized connections with customers as part of the primary responsibilities in the advertised job. The third skill is decision-making skills. The advertised position requires deciding what should be done to maintain a good relationship with customers and effectively complete assigned tasks within the organization, hence the need for decision-making skills. The fourth skill is leadership skills. One of the job’s responsibilities is being ready to step in for another manager when the need arises hence the need for leadership skills. The fifth skill is teamwork skill. I need teamwork skills to facilitate the exchange of ideas with other employees so that I can effectively plan and hold local events that connect the community and facilitate an increase in sales and traffic. My newly acquired knowledge and cultural awareness skills have shaped my personal and professional development. According to Fei (2015), cultural awareness is the sensitivity to the differences and similarities between people from different cultures. For example, I am comfortable interacting with people from different backgrounds because I understand how to avoid stereotypes and biases that could limit our interaction. For instance, I have been able to volunteer in community programs that involve people from different backgrounds, thus improving how I relate with people from diverse backgrounds and helping me acquire networks that I can use to identify professional opportunities. My newly acquired knowledge and conflict-resolution skills have also shaped my personal and professional development. For example, during my last employment, I was assigned as the team leader after effectively resolving a conflict among employees. I used the opportunity to demonstrate good leadership skills and was later promoted to a junior manager’s position.

Plans for Putting My Education to Use Within My Community.

I plan to use my education to help the community by promoting positive change. For example, I will use my knowledge of civic responsibility to identify what I can do to create change in the community. I can also use the knowledge and competencies in team management and teamwork to mobilize other people in the community to push for positive change within the community.
