Refining a Dissertation or Research Study Topic- Mental Healthcare

The potential topic for my dissertation is mental healthcare. Mental healthcare is an evolving field in contemporary healthcare. There exists considerable divergence in the global approaches to advancing mental healthcare across societies (Bhugra et al., 2022). Societies like the US and other developed countries have a higher recognition of mental health illnesses and accord them similar attention to other physical illnesses. This is, however, not the case in societies such as developing countries. In these societies, mental health illnesses continue to be ignored, with little resources allocated to efforts targeted at advancing mental healthcare. This, perhaps, is the reason for the disproportionality seen in mental healthcare in these societies. Notwithstanding, mental health illnesses remain a global health concern. These illnesses affect millions of people across the globe and are a leading cause of functional decline, morbidity, and mortalities (Carbonell et al., 2020). Thus, these illnesses must be given due consideration during normative healthcare processes.

I plan to focus my study on quality improvement in mental healthcare, interrogating factors that impede and those that improve mental healthcare in disadvantaged communities. My study is grounded on the fact that these communities are disproportionately affected by these illnesses. Research studies on this topic are warranted because of the impacts of mental health illnesses on population health.

The dissertation topic is feasible as it can be executed using diverse methodologies. It also contributes to the efforts to address traditional problems affecting mental health illnesses. The topic falls in the category of too broad. To further enhance its feasibility, I intend to choose a specific population to conduct the study on. This will narrow the research, making it cheaper yet still relevant.
