Quality Management
Before Total Quality Management
Organizations typically used the Kaizen approach before the total quality management concept of managing quality. The Kaizen approach is based on the idea that small positive improvements significantly improve an organization’s offerings (Rosak-Szyrocka, 2019). Under the Kaizen approach, organizational players collaborate and commit to the organization’s goals instead of radical top-down management. The approach was primarily developed to reduce waste, enhance productivity, encourage innovation, and encourage employees.
Ford Company is an example of a company that has used the Kaizen approach to quality improvement. The company’s revolution around 2006 resulted from innovations from the Kaizen approach. In addition, Ford continually released new and improved products to bolster its market share. After about nine years of work inspired by the Kaizen theory, the company came out of a biting bankruptcy.
Comprehensive View of Total Quality Management
Improving innovative performance contributes to a more comprehensive strategic view of total quality management. Making cultural and system improvements will go a long way toward creating an environment that facilitates positive, innovative change (Nouri, 2013). Organizations must also consider their customers’ needs as they make creative changes. Therefore, a comprehensive view calls for balancing customer needs and quality improvements.
Benefits of a Comprehensive View of Total Quality Management
A comprehensive strategic view of total quality management benefits the organization. Firstly, it helps the organization retain customers by considering their interests (Nouri, 2013). Instead of just innovating to catch up with market changes, organizations first consider their customers’ needs. The second benefit is that organizations will reduce costs while seeking to improve quality. Cost reductions are a result of operational improvements.
