Qualitative vs Quantitative Research

Qualitative vs Quantitative Research

Evidence-based practice involves the translation of research into clinical practice. An example of EBP in psychiatric nursing is placing suicidal patients in the least restrictive safe environment that allows for easy monitoring and observation (Mann et al., 2021). This allows prompt assessment of suicidal risk and may help prevent harm from befalling the patient.

Qualitative and quantitative research can be utilized to form aspects of psychiatric nursing. Qualitative research provides deeper insight into psychiatric care by allowing the analysis of non-numerical data and subsequent understanding of attitudes, beliefs, and motivations behind human behaviour (Busetto et al., 2020). Quantitative research utilizes numerical data to produce convergent reasoning that also helps inform aspects of psychiatric care (Borgstede & Scholz, 2021). They can help draw conclusions and predict the available treatment options.

The problem considered for the DNP project is whether changing the social conception of mental health illnesses in minority groups can lower the stigma associated with these illnesses and whether the available strategies are effective. The peer-reviewed article addressing the problem is “Mental Health Education, Awareness and Stigma Regarding Mental Illness Among College Students” (Shim et al., 2022). This article explores the impact of psychoeducational tools in improving mental health awareness and lowering the stigma associated with these illnesses. The study is a cross-sectional survey research targeted at gathering responses from 147 study participants. The research is level 1 evidence, utilizing quantitative methods to summarize its findings.

The critical appraisal questions used

Why was the study done (purpose)?

The study aimed to explore the impact of psychoeducational tools on improving mental health awareness.

What was the study design?

The study was a cross-sectional survey research

Was an appropriate ethics review reported?

Yes.

What was the sample size?

147

What Does This Research Mean for Clinical Practice

The research reiterates the need for mental health education to raise awareness of these illnesses, enable understanding of this disease, and lower the stigma. Findings from this research can be used to answer the clinical problem. Creating awareness of mental health disorders can change the social conception of these illnesses and thereby enhance the health-seeking behaviour of the affected persons.

Question

Discussion Board:

A. Share an example of evidence-based practice from your work setting.
B & C. Describe how qualitative and quantitative research results can be used to solve practice problems. This is known as translational research. (Relates to MO2)

Qualitative vs Quantitative Research

Qualitative vs Quantitative Research

Refer back to the last module’s discussion board item #4 in which you identified one or two potential problems that you are considering for your DNP Project. As we move into the building blocks for evidence, try to think about what you want to improve through your DNP project.
A. State the problem that you are considering for your DNP project.
B. Find a peer-reviewed quantitative research article that addresses this problem.
C & D. State the type of research design and the associated level of evidence in the article.
E. What critical appraisal questions did you use to critique this article from Melnyk Chapter 5? Please list both the question and the answer to each question. (Use the questions that match the research design in the article).
F. How can you use this evidence from your chosen article to solve your clinical problem? (Relates to MO1,2,3,4)
