Pros and Cons of Entering Late Adulthood

Pros and Cons of Entering Late Adulthood

Transitioning into late adulthood(65 and older) is a bit difficult because the person faces a lot of changes and challenges. Let me try to give you an idea about it.

PHYSICAL

their material aspects are declining. There has been a decline in energy, strength, and muscle development. Some also may be experiencing a lot of physical ailments and concerns. The pros of this decline are that they may become more careful of themselves and focus on more meaningful activities, like meditation, prayer, and other activities that don’t involve a lot of physical strains. The disadvantages could involve a lot of possible accidents. Because their body weakens, they may slip occasionally and be put at a higher risk. Their eyesight is also starting to blur.

PSYCHOSOCIAL

Regarding psychosocial, some older people become emotionally involved in their family and have few but great friends. They tend to be moody and are easily hurt—some also long for their families’ attention. Pros would involve more time for self-reflection, and cons would involve more conflicts in the family because of the person’s emotionality.

COGNITIVE

In terms of cognition, their fluid intelligence becomes crystallized. It means they find it challenging to learn new things but are very knowledgeable. We could notice older people to be sharing their insights with other people.

In general, if we look into Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages of development, the conflict here is Integrity vs. Despair. The person will have to reminisce about their past and think if they can do what they need and want to do.
