Proposed Project Interventions

Proposed Project Interventions

Laser therapies are being explored as options for managing hyperpigmentation in patients with melasma. This article discusses the current evidence-based data on the use of pico laser therapy as an intervention, factors and barriers influencing this proposed intervention, a list of resources needed for the project, sequence of events, project tracking, role of staff, supporting strategies, timeline, and expected outcomes.

Extent of Evidence-Based Data for Proposed Interventions

Available evidence supports the use of laser treatments in managing pigmentary disorders. For instance, Roohaninasab et al. (2021) found that laser treatments resulted in excellent and satisfactory results in patients with periorbital hyperpigmentation in only 4–6 months of therapy. Similarly, Mahadevy et al.’s (2024) systematic review found that Q-switched laser treatments efficiently and effectively treated cutaneous disorders of hyperpigmentation in patients with different skin tones. Additionally, laser therapies such as sequential laser treatment have high efficacy and effectiveness in managing dermal hyperpigmentation (Garg et al., 2024). Such evidence forms the basis for further exploration of laser technologies’ long-term efficacy and safety in managing hyperpigmentation in different skin tones.

Influencing Factors for the Use of Pico Laser Treatment

Laser treatments such as pico laser treatment in treating hyperpigmentation are affected by factors such as skin type and severity of the hyperpigmentation (Roohaninasab et al., 2021) and patient adherence to the treatment plan. Other factors, such as the equipment cost and patient’s expectations and beliefs about pigmentary disorders and laser treatment, may also affect the acceptance of pico laser treatment.

Barriers Related to Pico Laser Treatment

Barriers to the use of pico laser treatment include concerns over the efficacy and safety of the laser treatment (Feng et al., 2023), associated side effects, and the overall cost of the treatment, which may create equity and accessibility issues among patients from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Other barriers include the length of treatment, the period taken to realize positive outcomes, and provider competencies in the use of laser therapies.

Needed Resources

Resources will include 1) pico laser therapy tools, 2) laser safety equipment, 3) facility resources, including space for the project and staff, and 4) data collection and analysis tools.

Sequence of Events

  1. Step one: Review evidence and guidelines on laser treatment for pigmentary disorders
  2. Step two: Patient screening and selection of participants
  3. Step three: Patient education on the project and informed consent
  4. Step four: Pre-pico laser treatment data collection for baseline score
  5. Step five: Pico laser treatment sessions
  6. Step six: Post-pico laser treatment data collection
  7. Step seven: Follow-up and ongoing review

Project Monitoring, Tracking, and Ongoing Review

Project monitoring, tracking, and ongoing review will include evaluation of progress using the MASI tool, monitoring of patients for adverse effects of laser treatment, observation of changes in pigmentation, collection of patient feedback, and analysis of collected data.

Staff Responsibilities and Qualifications

The project includes a board-certified dermatologist responsible for patient consultations, guide laser treatment planning and outcome observations, nursing staff who will care for patients before, during, and after the treatment, and a laser technology specialist to help with the technical use of laser equipment. A qualified data analyst will also help with data collection and analysis.

Facilitation Strategies

The project implementation facilitation strategies include educating the patients on the project and treatments, addressing their concerns, providing support to patients with financial needs during the treatment period, and conducting community education drives on melasma and hyperpigmentation disorders. There will also be a preset budget for the project, staff training, and standardizing laser treatment protocol across all patients.

Timeline

The project runs for 6 months:

Conclusion and Expected Outcomes

As laser therapies are finding various applications in medical settings, this 6-month project focuses on applying pico laser therapy to manage hyperpigmentation in patients with melasma with a focus on the treatment’s effectiveness, efficacy, and safety. The expected project outcomes include a significant reduction in melasma severity, visible reduction in hyperpigmentation, increased patient satisfaction with facial cosmetic appearance, better patient knowledge of risk factors for pigmentary disorders, and improved data on laser treatment efficacy, effectiveness, and safety.
