Part 1: Introduction
Artificial intelligence, more commonly referred to as AI, is essential to the imitation of human processes of intelligence by machines, computer systems in particular. These include learning, reasoning, and self-correction. AI has evolved since its beginning in the mid-20th century when early researchers like Alan Turing and John McCarthy laid its groundwork. Nowadays, AI is segued into many subfields that span from machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to robotics and computer vision. Its uses are across many industries, ranging from health and finance, and it is also an integral part of daily modern life (Kumar et al. 442).
One of the outstanding applications of AI is ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a model in the cutting-edge series of language models developed by Open AI. ChatGPT is based on an architectural design called GPT, or generative pre-trained transformer—a deep learning-based model that will generate text-like output based on the input. The GPT model has been developed at OpenAI since 2018; successive versions have grown in complexity and capability. Specifically, ChatGPT is fine-tuned for interaction with users in natural language to provide information, answer questions, and even converse.
Deep technical structures underly ChatGPT, including complex neural networks capable of processing a huge amount of data with the aim of understanding and generating amazingly natural-sounding text. This model has been pre-trained on an extremely wide range of Internet texts, creating a wide factual resource base for the model. However, ChatGPT does not have the ability to be conscious or understand; it provides responses based on patterns in data rather than actual comprehension (Mittelstadt et al. 4).
Part 2: Ethical Considerations
The use of AI, and particularly the use of ChatGPT, brings several ethical issues into question. One of the more basic underlying issues is bias. Since the data that ChatGPT has been trained on is sourced from the internet, including biased or one-sided data, the model might involuntarily continue this in its output or responses. This could be a problem in contexts where, for instance, the information being communicated must not be biased, such as in legal or medical advice.
Another ethical issue is misinformation. As much as ChatGPT is a powerful tool for generating text, it lacks the capacity to fact-check the information that it provides. This limitation may produce a number of negative effects on the spread of inaccurate and misleading information, especially when users solely depend on the model without previous confirmation of the content given (Price and Cohen 38).
Users also have their responsibilities when using AI. As ChatGPT becomes more integrated into educational and professional contexts, users should be aware of limitations and use it responsibly: that is, verifying information provided by the AI against reliable sources and acknowledging that the AI serves to augment human judgment, not replace it.
Part 3: Use Cases
Positive uses of ChatGPT span many fields, including education, business, and healthcare. As an example, in an educational setting, ChatGPT will be useful to students in courses such as INT 1111 (Introduction to Information Technology), ART 2700 (Art History), and EGL 1010 (Composition). The model can support students in brainstorming topics for writing essays, understanding items that are normally complex by simplifying them, and giving examples of assignments. In this regard, in the class INT 1111, for example, the usage of ChatGPT assists the student in comprehending the historical development of computing technologies, while in the class ART 2700, the artificial intelligence would help to give insights into different movements in art and what each of them means (Kumar et al. 444).
Business uses may also include utilizing ChatGPT in customer service for frequently asked questions, sending emails, or developing content for marketing materials. Medical applications can include using AI models to help ChatGPT with patient education, preliminary diagnoses based on symptoms, or offering mental health through conversational agents.
However, there are also risks in these use cases. For example, using ChatGPT in education could lead to a lack of critical thinking and research among students as they will more likely rely on the capabilities of the tool. In healthcare, the AI tool may provide incorrect or misleading information if not properly vetted by licensed medical professionals (Mittelstadt et al. 7).
Part 4: Guidelines for Ethical Use
Some best practices that can be followed in order to reduce the risks of AI and make it usable in an ethical manner are as follows:
- Verification of Information: Any information given by ChatGPT should be further assessed for validity against information from other credible sources. This is particularly regarding facts in education, medicine, or law. As such, users should view responses from the AI as a starting point toward further research but not the final answer (Price and Cohen 42).
- Respectful Communication: When using ChatGPT, communicate respectfully and avoid the use of AI in creating or propagating harmful, abusive, or offensive content. This will ensure that AI will be used only to facilitate positive and constructive dialogues, as suggested by Jobin et al. (394).
- Bias Awareness: ChatGPT could show some biases in the data that aligned with training it. Users should critically view the AI responses, particularly on sensitive issues, and try to identify and counter any bias that may appear.
- Proper Citation of AI in Research: Whenever using the material from ChatGPT in academic or professional settings, it is necessary to provide proper referencing of the output.
Part 5: Practical Application
To demonstrate the practical application of these guidelines, I used ChatGPT to generate a response to the following prompt: “Explain the ethical implications of using AI in healthcare.”
Response from ChatGPT: “AI in healthcare offers numerous benefits, including improved diagnostics, personalized treatment plans, and enhanced patient care. However, there are significant ethical implications to consider. These include concerns about patient privacy, as AI systems often require access to sensitive health data. There is also the risk of biases in AI algorithms, which could lead to unequal treatment outcomes. Additionally, the use of AI may lead to a reduction in human oversight, potentially compromising the quality of care if AI systems are not properly monitored and validated.”
Fact-Checking: The response of ChatGPT reflects generally accepted ethical considerations in AI health care. Many of these issues have been explored in detail in a number of articles by Amedior (10) and Price and Cohen (43). These sources point to the fact that the AI’s response was accurate.
Part 6: Reflection
The more I work through using the ChatGPT for this assignment, the more ethical issues I raise. These include biased outcomes, misinformation being spread, and obligations from users. One potential positive use case considered was how students could employ AI in order to better understand difficult topics while taking a class such as Art History. This would then have to be weighed against the potential for students to rely on the tool.
The guidelines developed include cross-validation, respectful communication, understanding of bias, and the citation of AI work. The practical application was proof of how these can be applied in real life, especially when fact-checking AI responses. The possible impact that ChatGPT will have on society is huge; it can change how we look toward education, business, health, and many other sections. Again, this also brings into importance responsible usage of AI to ensure that the benefits accrue without compromising ethical standards.
