Part 2: Reflection
Professionalism as an educator requires being professional with all stakeholders that are involved in the education process. The teacher needs to apply rules of professionalism that affect the students, their families, colleagues, and administrators. With students, professionalism requires the development of an environment that maximizes learning for everyone, regardless of their differences. The College of Education rules of professional conduct provide many guidelines that can help foster an environment of inclusion and learning for all students. For instance, these standards guide students to believe that all students have the ability to learn. They must create an environment that considers the students’ individual needs in the teaching and assessment process. Similarly, teachers need to be inclusive when they involve the families of students in their professional practice. The teachers’ code of ethics requires them to be inclusive of all families and foster an environment of collaboration. Therefore, the examples of the professional actions included in the table focus on ensuring all families, regardless of their backgrounds, are included in their students’ goal development and learning. When it comes to dealing with colleagues and administrators, professionalism involves maintaining cordial interactions. For example, when solving conflicts, it is important to make sure that teachers maintain an environment of respect regardless of the kind of day they are having. When there is a conflict of interest, they should be ready to inform relevant authorities of the conflict to avoid affecting the effectiveness of their work. Collaborating with colleagues and administrators also requires communication effectiveness through the maintenance of the rules of communication in the workplace environment.
