Due to modern technology and innovation today, family structure has changed, leading to new trends in the upbringing of children. Today, parents are more occupied with their career life, leaving no time to interact with their children. The following are some of the current issues affecting families and children.
Children Born to Mothers Who Are Substance Abusers
Children born by mothers who are substance abusers are at more risk of being addicted to drugs. These children are usually hyperactive (Machado and Jeanne 341) and usually overreact to stimuli and environment. As a result, these children require constant care to help them overcome the possible effects of drug abuse when they grow up. Therefore, love and support become essential to nurturing these children as they grow up.
Changing Children
Children born in modern families tend to be more critical than those born in traditional settings. They tend to be more sensitive, hence the high rates of mental illnesses today. Additionally, due to a lack of parental care, they tend to be more sophisticated and are more prone to suicidal thoughts.
The Importance of Fathers
Research shows that fathers play a crucial role in nurturing a child (Machado and Jeanne 343). Children brought up by both parents are more likely to be disciplined than those from single parenthood. However, today, most children come from single-parent families due to divorce and separation. A lack of a father figure means a lack of leadership skills (Machado and Jeanne 343). As such, these children are more likely to show sensitivity in behavior patterns, displaying these tendencies even at the classroom level. Therefore, this has become a trend in most societies today.
Parent Support Structure
Parent involvement in a child’s learning is crucial for a student’s general success in education. However, today, most children are raised in families where both parents work, hence less time to participate in children’s upbringing. Teachers should encourage parents to set aside time to participate in their children’s education (Machado et Al, 342). This way, parents and teachers can engage and gain a deeper understanding of students’ education needs.
Parent Outreach
Parent outreach is a crucial component of improving student performance. This involves building avenues that facilitate the process of keeping parents informed. Parents have become more essential in participating in their children’s development. However, most parents are often busy, leaving their children to caregivers and teachers. Teachers can create reports or journals outlining a child’s daily progress to encourage parents’ participation in their children’s lives. This way, it becomes easy to get parent feedback through observation.
