Product and Process Design

Product development is the complete product life cycle. The process starts when a company conducts market analysis, design, launch, marketing, sales, and after-sale services. That means a product stays in the product development stage throughout its lifetime. On the other hand, product design is just part of the whole product life cycle involving design creation for the new product. A product, in this case, refers to a service, physical goods, or software.

A new product essentially alters the competitive market landscape. Once a company launches a new product, it will likely attract new customers, retain new ones, and boost profitability (Bozarth, Handfield & Weiss, 2008). New product development is perhaps the most critical step towards gaining a competitive advantage if implemented correctly. For instance, General Motors has remained a top competitor in the vehicle industry due to new product development. The company would not have survived if it continued to make 2000s vehicle models.

Apple is one of the most notable companies leading in new product development. Using the leapfrogging strategy, Apple has introduced a successful new iPhone series that has kept competitors like Samsung, Nokia, and Huawei at bay.

Apple’s smartphone series remains one of the best-selling smartphone brands globally. The brand remains popular, especially among high-end customers, since it brings sophisticated smartphone user experiences and features that attract them.

Product design does not happen by accident but instead involves coordination and communication between people within and outside the firm. To design successful products, the firm also needs to avail the necessary materials and resources, which means a readiness to spend significant sums of money (Bozarth, Handfield & Weiss, 2008). Also, product design should respond to client needs, without which it may fail once it is launched.
