Private-Public- Nonprofit Partnerships

Public-private partnership (PPP) primarily refers to collaboration between a government agency and private companies to finance, build, and operate public projects. Such projects include healthcare provision, recreational parks, and transport infrastructure construction, among others. Forming PPPs becomes necessary to provide much-needed accountability and transparency in projects (Kettl, 2018). The principles of accountability and transparency are essential in ensuring that citizens receive quality public services and goods. These organizations also become necessary when dealing with poor populations, ensuring pro-poor objectives are attained. The’ Be Connected’ project is one of the most necessary PPPs (P3) in the US. The nonprofit in Arizona links active service members and veterans to crucial support systems and resources. Currently, the nonprofit serves about 500,000 members who call Arizona their home. According to the Arizona Coalition for Military Families (n.d.), one of the factors that necessitated the formation of the ‘Be Connected’ P3 nonprofit is the high level of suicide amongst former service members. The government could not solve the menace itself, hence the need to partner with the military and private healthcare providers. There was also a need to capitalize on existing service systems to ensure proper coordination of veterans’ affairs. Finally, thveterans need more funding since few players had previously delved into the sector.

However, some other P3 nonprofits are quite unnecessary. A good example is the Michigan Corrections P3. Politicians represented the needs of a special interest population (juvenile convicts) through the organization. A key downside of the nonprofit is that it was fairly expensive, exceeding the expenditure of most other juvenile prisons in the state. The initiative did not fulfill the requirements of a PPP, which is to provide pro-poor outcomes (Maltin, 2019). The initiative was sold as a cost-effective way of housing young lawbreakers, but it did not fulfill its objective, thus unnecessary.
